New History Department

New History Department was set up in 1957 under the name Working-class and revolutionary movement. Later it was renamed to Capitalism, working-class and revolutionary movement, and after the democratic changes in 1989 – New History. During the years in the department ware employed Kalina Koseva, Ivanka Kostova, Lilia Filipova and Angel Dinev PhD.

Department stores and promote cultural values associated with the history of Stara Zagora and the region, from the Unification of the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia (1885) until the end of World War II.

In the main and subsidiary fund of the New History Department there are taken an inventory of, classified and scientifically processed nearly 17,000 units related to the socio-political life, military, social and economic development, cultural life, education, science and arts in Stara Zagora region.

The most plentiful and attractive are the collections in the following topics:

  • History of Archaeological Society "Augusta Traiana" (1907-1944 years). The seal, inkstand, sign board of the first chairman Atanas Kozhuharov have been preserved, as well as rich documentary record;
  • Education and Publishing in Stara Zagora;
  • Musical and cultural heritage - instruments (piano, harpsichord, violin), personal belongings of regional cultural figures, a collection of paintings by Evgeniya Lepavtsova;
  • The participation of citizens of Stara Zagora in the wars for national liberation and unification (1912 - 1918); a collection of uniforms, weapons, orders and medals, photos, post cards and documents;
  • Socio-economic history of the Stara Zagora region;
  • Labour and revolutionary movement. History of the Communist Party in the city and the region (1891-1944);
  • Trade unions and anti-fascist movement;
  • A special place in the collection of the museum takes the photo documental archive of Old Stara Zagora (1885-1945). Several unique sky images of the city from the 30s of XX century are stored there.
